Fourteen months ago, I changed careers. I had been an independent consultant for 17 years (I still do public speaking), built a good practice and then gave it all away to go back into the corporate world as a vice president of global continuous improvement and supplier development for a high-growth manufacturing company based in Chicago. Here are the somewhat humorous, tongue-in-cheek, differences between life as a consultant and life of an executive, at least from my experience:

- As a consultant, the upper levels listen to you and want to learn. As a peer executive, the upper levels know it all and they don’t need to listen to you or request advice.
- As a consultant, you can park in the visitors spot. As an executive, your designated spot is sometimes taken by visitors who can’t read.
- As a consultant, you are paid to be openly critical. As an executive, you are paid to not rock the boat.
- As a consultant you listen to people’s gripes about the company. As an executive, you are the source of people’s gripes.
- As a consultant, you can talk about your great adventures. As an executive, people tell you about their own personal problems, expect you to care, and want advice (as if you don’t have problems) .
- As a consultant, you work to live. As an executive, you live to work.
- As a consultant, you enjoy life more. As an executive, you make more money.
- As a consultant you recommend getting the right people on the bus and off the bus, including firing people. As an executive, you don’t want to fire people because you know them.
- As a consultant on a client’s premises, you deal with one topic each day and do it well. As an executive, you deal with 73 topics and do none of them well.
- As a consultant, you get lunch bought for you most days. As an executive, there is no lunch.
- As a consultant, everything is so straightforward. As an executive, everything is so chaotic.
- As a consultant, you see lots of new places. As an executive, you see the same place a lot of times.
- As a consultant, there is a lack of security and a feeling of freedom. As an executive, there is security and a lack of freedom.
- As a consultant, you never take a sick day. As an executive, you are sick every time you see your office.
- As a consultant, you see your kids more often. As an executive, you see your employees as kids.
- As a consultant, you can be an idealist. As an executive, you’re the ideal realist.
- As a consultant, you make time to gain more knowledge. As an executive, you gain the knowledge that there is no time to learn.
- As a consultant, you fear getting sick. As an executive, you have health insurance.
- As a consultant, you can only hope the company enacts your advice. As an executive, you can make change happen.
- As a consultant, you’re an independent. As an executive, you’re a politician.
Besides this, life is great!
