The degrees of freedom is the number N of independent observations in the sample (i.e. the sample size) minus the number of statistics (mean, variance etc.) which must be estimated from the sample. Since we typically estimate only one parameter at a time, the number of degrees of freedom is usually calculated as df = N-1.
