Once a process area to study for improvement has been identified, the next thing is to define the scope of the project. To guide the team in this effort, a process improvement scope definition form is provided.
The team may need to solicit input from others in the organization to make sure they have selected to proper scope, goals, and metrics.
Since the team will be working outside their “normal” work responsibilities and will confront obstacles within the organization, it is critical to have management support (champion) for their project.
Management Champion should call together the teams members selected and give the team their charter and overall objective and timeframe. The team should then elect its own team leader.
The team should then define the information in the process improvement scope form. Building teamwork and consensus in the initial activity is important for the effectiveness of the team. If needed, team leader should request the service of an experienced facilitator.
